Since we opened our doors in May 1996, we have been passionately producing fine handcrafted real ales to the highest possible standards. Our ales are enjoyed in pubs all over the UK, but are particularly pleased that so many local drinkers choose our products, and we’re proud to have won numerous local and national awards over the years.
We are located just inside the city walls on Toft Green; a mere stones throw from the historic royal entrance to the city Micklegate Bar. Our naissance marked a return to brewing inside the city walls of York after a 40-year absence. The brewery site was built in the late 16th century, and most notably was the birthplace of Joseph Aloysius Hansom (1803-82), the inventor of the Hansom Cab. It is probable that he served as an apprentice joiner in his grandfather’s workshop in the former stables that now house our conditioning and racking equipment. A provisions merchant then briefly owned the building, before housing the carpet and furniture suppliers Whitby Oliver.
Now in use as our brewery, the site houses a 20-barrel brew plant, with six traditional open top fermenters and 5 conditioning tanks. A gallery above the brew house, along with a viewing panel into the fermenting room have been located to offer visitors a fantastic viewing platform whilst on one of our guided brewery tours.
